Water retention curve of clayey sands determined from pore structure by using various methods

چکیده
Besides standard approaches, the soil water retention curve (SWRC) can be estimated either from pore size distribution obtained by mercury intrusion porosimetry or freezing characteristic curve. These methods are based on simplified laws such as Young-Laplace for capillary suction ClausiusClapeyron cryo-suction. might not valid clayey sands where presence of clay particles would induce other mechanisms. This study aims to assess content's effect validity these two in determining SWRC sands. Clay were prepared at different contents mixing pure sand with kaolin prior compaction Proctor maximum dry density. Five (dry mass divided soil) considered (0, 5, 10, 15, and 20%). The reference was measurements. results show that SWRCs generally agreement SWRC. However, limited terms range (500 5 MPa) which is appropriate sands, while those significant discrepancy because structure heterogeneity compaction.

Estimation of Water Retention Curve for Unsaturated Fine Soils
In order to obtain the soil water retention curve of an unsaturated soil which is defined as the relationship between water content and suction, extensive laboratory tests are essential. These laboratory tests are usually costly and time consuming. Moreover, for most practical problems, it has been found that approximate unsaturated soil properties are adequate for analysis. Thus, empirical pro...

Consolidated-drained triaxial compression tests were conducted to compare the stress-strain and volume change response of sands and clayey sands reinforced with discrete randomly distributed poly-propylene fibers. The influence of various test parameters such as fiber content (0.0%, 0.5% and 1.0% by weight), clay content (0%, 10% and 20% by weight), relative density (50% and 90%) and confining ...
متن کاملWater Retention and Characteristic Curve
A soil-water characteristic (SWC) curve describes the amount of water retained in a soil (expressed as mass or volume water content, m or v) under equilibrium at a given matric potential. An SWC is an important hydraulic property, related to size and connectedness of pore spaces, hence strongly affected by soil texture and structure, and by other constituents, including organic matter. Modeling...

Three activated carbons are synthesized in a rotary reactor at different activation times. The adsorption isotherms of the samples are measured The pore size distribution of the samples is determined using combined Saito and Foley method, BJH method. An average potential function has been determined inside the cylindrical pores. The effect of activation time on the pore size distribution sample...
متن کاملEstimating the water retention curve from soil properties: comparison of linear, nonlinear and concomitant variable methods
The unsaturated soil hydraulic functions involving the soil–water retention curve (SWRC) and the hydraulic conductivity provide useful integrated indices of soil quality. Existing and newly devised methods were used to formulate pedotransfer functions (PTFs) that predict the SWRC from readily available soil data. The PTFs were calibrated using a large soils database from Hungary. The database c...
